Why Fondo: A traditional Gran Fondo event like the Maratona dles Dolomites is more than a long ride in the mountains. It’s a ride that captures the spirit of road cycling on routes that echo with the storied accomplishments of the greatest cyclists since the beginnings of our sport. The ideal bicycle for a ride like this is engineered to descend at high speed and with a responsive drivetrain for long, leg-burning climbs. Still, it should be designed with enough comfort so that the pain you feel at the end of the day is from the sweet exhaustion of your effort, not from your bike. Whether you are chasing legends or conquering your first century, the Fondo delivers.
Fondo vs. the Competition: Titanium delivers the best overall performance value for your investment. Mass-produced carbon frames from Asia are no match for the Fondo’s high-quality titanium. Because we only know one way to build a bike, the Fondo is built by hand in our factories in Poway, California, and Saratoga Springs, New York, by the same team of craftsmen who build all of our bikes to our one guiding standard: perfection. In developing the Fondo, our goal was to meet or exceed expectations in ride performance, design and manufacturing integrity – all while keeping your cycling budget in mind. One ride on a Fondo will convince you that we hit the mark. Ride after ride, year after year, it will accelerate, climb and descend like the precision cycling instrument that it is. Like a Serotta.
Experience Matters: Over our 40-year history Serotta has designed, engineered and crafted more bespoke bicycles than any other brand. The Fondo’s dozen standard sizes are based on the data we’ve compiled in building thousands of made-to-order long-distance road bicycles. So there’s probably a Fondo that will have just the right fit for you. The Fondo’s titanium frame is paired with a Serotta Composites S3 Carbon Fork, size-selected in stiffness and rake for a perfectly balanced ride.
The Fondo: All-day performance.
So what is “all-day performance” design? Not to be mistaken for a touring bike, the Fondo positions you not quite as long and low as a neo-pro’s race bike, thus reducing strain in your arms, neck and back. You can expect the Fondo to ride as we intended, with you in a position that won’t have you aching to get off the bike. The Fondo’s design emphasizes stability vs. being “criterium quick.” Its frame delivers just the right amount of torsional stiffness so the bike works with your body, not against it. The net result is that you conserve energy and can ride harder, longer.
How did we create a bike with these ride characteristics? The simple answer lies in the combination of decades of design experience, the precision engineering of the highest quality materials and the hand-built craftsmanship of 40,000 Serotta bikes.
The more complex answer lies in the under-the-hood details designed, engineered and built into each Serotta, a process Ben Serotta began more than 40 years ago. Beyond the flawless welds of our durable titanium tubes, the under-the-hood details of the Fondo SG include:
